National Senior’s Day: How to Show a Senior You Care

Did you know that October 1st was National Seniors Day in Canada? At Closing the Gap, we support seniors through advocacy and healthcare services designed specifically to provide the best care for their needs. In the words of the federal government, “…Canada is proud to acknowledge the life-long contributions our nation’s seniors have made and continue to make to their families, communities, and society.”

How can you show your love and respect to the elderly community?

Spend Time with Your Grandparents

You might be surprised to find out how much your grandparents have contributed to this world and what they have accomplished in their lifetime. Sit down or take a walk with your grandparents and find out what they were like when they were your age, what their hobbies were, what they wanted to be when they grew up. They’ll really appreciate the time spent together and the interest you show in them.

Treat Them to Something Special

Seniors Day is like Mother’s Day in that it’s the one day of the year where we take a moment to show our appreciation for what our seniors have done for our country, our community, and our family. And like Mother’s Day, it’s nice to show our appreciation by treating a senior to something special, like a gourmet meal, a trip to the movies, a walk to the beach, or simply an afternoon tea.

There are many federal and provincial programs for senior citizens to help them with everything from transportation and groceries, to medication and assisted living. Unfortunately, we spend so much of our time and energy focusing on their health that we sometimes forget about their happiness. Volunteering is a great way to show that you care about our seniors, and it allows you to give back to the community in creative ways. Speak with your local senior home to find out how you can bring a little fun and entertainment into their lives. Whether it’s through music, art, stand-up comedy, or crafts, seniors love it when volunteers come to visit.
